Hazardous Waste Land Treatment

Carlton Wiles    03 Desember 2008 652

This technical resource document provides state-of-the-art information
on all aspects of hazardous waste land treatment (HWLT). The document
is a practical reference for people involved in design and design
review, beginning with site selection and waste characterization and
progressing through facility design, operation, and closure.
Information on the fate of both inorganic and organic compounds in the
soil environment is included and provides a basis for developing
treatment demonstration. Non-hazardous waste constituents are also
discussed because they are likely to be important to the overall
design and management of the HWLT unit. Waste-site interactions that
affect treatment processes are discussed as well as laboratory,
greenhouse, and field testing protocols for assessing land treatment
performance. Methods for calculating loading rates and determining
limiting constituents are presented. Plot layout, water control,
erosion control, management of soil pH and fertility, vegetation
establishment, waste storage facilities, waste application methods and
equipment, site inspection, and recordkeeping requirements are
discussed. Monitoring procedures for waste, soil cores, soil-pore
liquids, runoff water, ground water, and vegetation are presented. The
contingency plans and emergency equipment needed at HWLT units are
also included. Finally, closure requirements and recommendations are
presented with the objective of closing the site so that little
environmental hazard will exist both during and after the post-closure
care period.

Technologies for Upgrading Existing or Designing New Drinking Water

03 Desember 2008 588

The 1986 statutory provisions of the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA)
amendments bring a large number of previously unregulated or minimally
regulated water systems under significant regulatory control. This
document covers both established and emerging technologies needed to
comply with these new regulations. Descriptions of each technology
include an overview of the process, performance, design
considerations, operating and maintenance aspects, costs, and
experiences. This information is meant to assist public water system
engineers, operators, and decision-makers faced with the many new
regulatory requirements in selecting methods of compliance. Chapter 2
is an overview of the selection process and potential technological
solutions for each contaminant or contaminant category. This chapter
serves as a guide to subsequent chapters that discuss each treatment
technology in more detail. It includes many tables that compare
relevant information between technologies. Case histories illustrating
experience with each technology are provided in appendices. Chapter 3
covers prefiltration elements of a water treatment system, including
rapid mixing, chemical dosage, coagulation, flocculation, and
sedimentation. While these elements usually precede filtration, they
may be found with other treatment technologies as well. These elements
impact the performance of subsequent components in the treatment
train, which are described in Chapters 4 through 7. Chapter 4
describes filtration technologies that address removal of turbidity
and microbial contamination. Technologies covered include
conventional, direct, slow sand, diatomaceous earth, membrane, and
cartridge filtration systems. Chapter 5 reports on the five major
disinfection technologies: chlorine, ozone, ultraviolet (UV)
radiation, chlorine dioxide, and chloramines. The problem of
disinfection by-products and strategies for their control are also
addressed. Chapters 6 and 7 describe technologies that address organic
and inorganic contamination, respectively. Treatment technologies for
organics removal include granular activated carbon, packed column
aeration, powdered activated carbon, diffused aeration, multiple tray
aeration, oxidation, mechanical aeration, catenary grid aeration,
Higee aeration, and membrane filtration. Treatment technologies for
inorganic removal include corrosion control, reverse osmosis, ion
exchange, activated alumina, aeration, and powdered activated carbon.
Chapter 8 reviews the recent research activities of EPA's Drinking
Water Research Division. Finally, Chapter 9 lists the reference used
in the entire document.

Environmental Pollution Control Alternatives: Drinking Water Treatment

John R. Trax, Fred Reiff, Deborah Brink, Elizabeth Kawczynski, John Dyksen    03 Desember 2008 598

Small drinking water systems face a difficult challenge; to provide a
safe, sufficient supply of water at a reasonable cost. This document
provides information for small system owners, operators, managers, and
local decision makers, such as town officials, regarding drinking
water treatment requirements and the treatment technologies suitable
for small systems. This manual is designed to give an overview of the
problems a small system may face, treatment options that are available
to solve specific problems, and resources that can provide further
information and assistance. Chapter 1 discusses why we need drinking
water treatment and gives an overview of drinking water treatment
processes. Chapter 2 provides a summary of existing and new federal
drinking water regulations and explains how these regulations affect
small systems. Chapter 3 provides an overview of how to select
drinking water treatment technologies and discusses special management
issues for small systems. Chapters 4 through 7 describe technologies
that can enable small systems to meet federal drinking water
regulations covering filtration, disinfection, removal of organic and
inorganic contaminants, and corrosion control. These chapters describe
established technologies, which are commonly used in the water
treatment industry. They also describe several emerging technologies
suitable for small systems. These technologies have not been widely
used, but have proven effective on the pilot scale and are emerging as
viable full-scale options for treating water supplies. Chapter 8 lists
organizations, publications, and other resources that can assist small
systems in their efforts to provide safe drinking water to consumers.

Water Use and Wastewater Discharge Patterns in A Turkey Processing Plant

Brian W. Sheldon, Ph.D., Roy E. Carawan, William C. Merka    03 Desember 2008 567

A turkey processing plant was surveyed to identify water use and
organic waste loads generated at different stages of processing. The
study also included a feasibility study of water and waste reduction
options with projected annual cost savings. This publication
demonstrates the pollution prevention programs can payoff for turkey
processors. This publication provides the materials and methods which
is used for the study, the result of the study (average water use / 3
days, average COD values / 3 days, average concentration of the
wastewater effluent / 3 days, water flowrates by sample location,
daily waste loads generated at several process location, value of
water conservation for turkey processors, and value of waste load
reduction for turkey processors), and wastewater reduction hints for
turkey processor.

Waste Reduction Opportunities in the Pulp and Paper Industry in the Republic of Indonesia

Raytheon Engineers & Constructors, Inc   03 Desember 2008 706

A Clean Production Assessment (CPA) seeks to reduce waste by identifying opportunities for improving the manufacturing process, raw material substitutions, the recycle and reuse of waste materials, and finally, the treatment of waste stream to reduce the discharge of wastes into the environment. The assessment included evaluations of the companies, pulping and chemical recovery operations, paper productions, water use, chemical management, energy generation and consumption, environmental control system, and management programs.

This report presents the results of that assessment. The primary objectives of theCPA are to identify process improvements that eliminate or minimize industrial waste, improve industrial and operational control and environmental management systems, and increase the skill levels of local professional and industry leaders in pollution prevention systems and methods.

The secondary objectives of the program are enhanced environmental awareness throughout the industry, improved operational productivity, and increased opportunities for recycling and reuse. The CPA examines the types and quantities of waste and how they are generated. After gathering data at the plant, the CPA team prepares recommendations on technical and managerial actions to reduce waste. These recommendatins fall into the following categories: prevention, recycling, and treatment.
