Performance Improvement Planning: Designing an Effective Leakage Reduction and Management Program
Pronita Chakrabarti Agrawal
Th.
910
One of the principal concerns today for the deteriorating quality of water supply and sanitation services in India is the high levels of nonrevenue water (NRW)-the difference between the amount of water billed to consumers. High levels of NRW result from huge volumes of water lost through leaks or water not invoiced to consumers or both, and this seriously affects financial viability of water providers through lost revenues, increased operational costs and, eventually, increased capital costs.
This field note captures the core principles for the effective implementation of nonrevenue water programs through real world example of service providers implementing such programs in India and Vietnam. The case studies demonstrate that successful leakage reduction and its effective and sustainable implementation has not been a result of erratic and irregular technical exercises to reduce physical losses.

A Review of The Sanitation and Hygiene Status in 32 Countries: Can Africa Afford to Miss the Sanitation MDG Target?
Th.
847
This report documents both the progress and barriers facing countries in their quest to achieve their sanitation MDG. Its purpose is to present an honest overview of the sanitation situation in the region based on 32 country assessments. The report identifies common challenges and issues across countries and discusses some possible solutions and options based on the innovations which are already taking place within the continent and elsewhere in the world. The lessons learned are important for replication and to help achieve scale and impact; these last two being crucial for MDG achievement in Africa.
This report likely to be a valuable resource for anyone working in the sanitation sector. It provides up-to-date comparative data for the region as well as information on strategic areas such as the national policies and institutional frameworks for sanitation within each country; financing and resources; capacity and monitoring and evaluation.
But this report has one other important function: to raise awareness of the state of sanitation within countries, and at regional and global levels. International and national pressure is needed to succeed; this document provides irrefutable evidence: the Africa region requires a mighty effort from all stakeholders to achieve the MDG on sanitation.

Menuju Pencapaian Target MDG di Daerah: Air Minum dan Sanitasi Dasar (Materi Suplemen Panduan Komunikasi MDG)
01 April 2009
2.528

Many governments and agencies in Africa are exploring the role of ecological sanitation, or EcoSan, within their environmental sanitation and hygiene improvement programs. Despite convincing environmental and economic reasons to support this approach, acceptance of the technology has been very limited so far. This field note reviews experience in Eastern Africa and, with less detail, Southern Africa.

Jamshedpur Utilities and Services Company Limited (JUSCO), a whooly owned subsidiary of Tata Steel, was set up in August 2003 to improve the quality of civic services in Jamshedpur. The intent has been to make it a model town with world class facilities. This initiative of converting a cost-centric service into a commercial customer-oriented company is the first of its kind in India.
This field note seeks to capture the initiative of converting a cost-centric service into a commercial and customer-oriented company. Based on its successful home operations, the private operator is also exploring options for expanding its expertise beyond its own operating areas to other interested towns and cities, while continuosly improving services in Jamshedpur.
