Advances in Construction Materials, Techniques and Management

A US India binational workshop on Advances in Construction Materials, Techniques and Management was held at VGP Golden Beach Resort Hotel, Madras between December 10 to 14, 1990. It was organized by National Science Foundation, Washington, D.C., Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (Buiding Technology Division, Civil Engineering Department), with the approval of Department  of Science and Technology, Govt.of India, New Delhi. It was funded by National Science Foundation, United Nations Centre for Human Settlements and I.I.T Madras and Co-sponsored by a number of organisations. More than 150 delegates from the construction industry, governmental organizations and research institutions attended this professional meeting and participated in the discussions.

The primary objectives of the workshop were:
a. To get familiarized with the state of the art on materials and techniques of construction in the United States and India.
b. To study the needs of the construction industry in the US and India
c. To identify topic areas of research and development which can be carried out in both the countries on a cooperative basis.
d. To identify industry leaders and researchers who are interested in participating in these colaborative research and development efforts.

In addtion, the workshop was expected to act as a forum for interaction between Indian construction industry leaders and researchers on topics that pertain to industry problems and method of solutions.

This book is a collection of all papers presented in the workshop. It has been put together with a hope that it can function as a control sample from which future cooperative activities between the two countries (in terms of research and development) can be gauged.

The authors of the papers were requested to present the material from a guideline that emphasizes the changes that have taken place during that last two decades, the current and the future needs of the industry, and the primary areas of research. The publication also contains the names and adressess of the participants and those of subcommittee decisions is presented at the end of the book.
